Mistake 1: Skipping Subgrade Compaction
Excavators strip the topsoil, dump stone, and call it done. The uncompacted subgrade continues settling for years, creating waves and dips in the riding surface. By the time problems appear, the only fix is starting over.
The fix: Test subgrade compaction before any aggregate arrives. If you can push a probe 6 inches into the soil with hand pressure, it's not ready for stone.
Mistake 2: Using Round River Rock
River gravel is cheap and available. It's also useless for arena bases. Round stones can't interlock—they roll and shift under load indefinitely. No amount of compaction creates stability.
The fix: Specify crushed angular aggregate only. The fractured faces create mechanical interlock that round stones cannot achieve.
Mistake 3: Insufficient Aggregate Depth on Clay
"Four inches of stone worked on my friend's arena in Arizona" doesn't mean it works on your clay soil in Ohio. Clay has almost no bearing capacity when wet. Four inches of stone on saturated clay is just expensive gravel floating on mud.
The fix: Match aggregate depth to soil conditions, not to budget constraints. If clay soil requires 8 inches of stone, that's what it requires.

Stone directly under footing creates a mixing zone. Footing works down into aggregate gaps; fines work up into footing. Within two years, you've lost footing depth and base integrity simultaneously.
The fix: Never skip screenings or drainage mat installation. The separation layer costs hundreds; replacing contaminated footing costs thousands.
Mistake 5: Single-Lift Compaction
Dumping 8 inches of stone and running a plate compactor over the top doesn't compact the bottom 4 inches. You have a firm surface over loose stone over unstable subgrade—a failure waiting to happen.
